Study Abroad Student Report: Autumn Larmee

During my time in Barcelona, Spain, I interned at a startup textile company called La Blu. As a data science intern at La Blu, I assisted in customer segmentation analysis and keyword research for search engine optimization. Working on real-world projects helped me to understand the practical applications of data science. I witnessed firsthand how data-driven insights can impact business decisions and lead to measurable improvements. In addition to gaining new technical skills, working on a team with professionals from different backgrounds and areas of expertise allowed me to practice effective communication to achieve shared goals. By learning to navigate language barriers and embracing new methodologies, I experienced the importance of seeking varied viewpoints to develop better solutions and encourage growth.

Outside of work, I explored Barcelona and other regions of Spain. One of my favorite weekend trips was solo traveling to San Sebastian, a city in Spain’s Basque Country, where I learned to surf, ate pintxos, and hiked the Camino de Santiago, a long-time goal of mine. Solo traveling in a foreign country was certainly a test for my navigation and communication skills, but I believe I gained more grit and resilience because of the experience. While I enjoyed feeling independent, I also loved meeting so many interesting people in the hostels and learning about their lives and travels. I was amazed by the geographical and cultural diversity throughout Spain. I visited three autonomous regions–Basque Country, Catalonia, and Andalusia–each with a unique landscape, history, and even language. It was so gratifying to learn about each of these regions, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience this wonderful country!
