Alex Weber: Student Report from 2017 Alternative Summer Break in Ecuador

My trip to Ecuador was a unique experience. The project in which we participated there was both challenging and educational. There were many fun experiences throughout the trip. I won’t bore you with the details of the entire trip, but rather fill you with the wonder that made up my most memorable experiences.

This was a picture taken at the top of one of the oldest cathedrals in Ecuador, located in the heart of Old Quito. This was taken on the first day after having arrived in Quito the night before. It was a day filled with exploration and great food. This was one of the best views of the city, as it had a magnificent 360-degree view of the entire area.

These pictures were taken at the Yana Cocha Animal Sanctuary. The one on the left illustrates some of the working conditions we faced, and how it was truly an adapt-and-overcome scenario. The project was a great success in the end, and the bridge in the picture turned out perfectly. The picture on the right is at the entrance to the animal sanctuary with the entire group from TCE.

This picture is from one of our last days in Puyo, the small town where the animal sanctuary was located. This was at the sanctuary’s secondary location, further into the Amazon, to ensure reintroduction of animals into the wild.  This is the top of their property with extraordinary views, where we learned to shoot a blow-gun. I was able to hit the target on the first shot! From there we went on a hike to an amazing waterfall, seen below.

This trip was an unforgettable experience. I now have one more country to add to my list of favorite places I have visited. I hope anyone that reads this is inspired and wishes to embark on your own journey to Ecuador. You won’t regret it.
