Nuclear Engineering Students Honored for Awards

The Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE) held its annual awards dinner on Monday, April 20, 2015. Students in the department won eleven NEUP scholarships and three NEUP graduate fellowships.

This year’s NEUP scholarships winners are James Brackett, Carl Britt, Dane de Wet, Rachel Gaudet, Adam Hasse, Travis Laboissiere-Hickman, Peyton Lara, Eric Nelius, Saya Rutherford, Whitney Smith, Alyxandria Wszolek.

The 2015 NEUP graduate fellowships were won by Kaitlyn Darby, Cody Walker, and Cody Wiggins.

The 2014-2015 ANS Scholarships were also recently released, with UT students winning eleven of them.

  • Ashlyn Jones: ANS Vogt Radiochemistry Scholarship
  • Travis Laboissiere-Hickman: ANS Reactor Physics Division Scholarship
  • Erik Walker: ANS Graduate Scholarship
  • Zach Welz: Uhrig I&C Graduate Scholarship
  • Austin Mullen: Undergraduate Scholarship – Sophomore
  • Adam Stratz: ANS Decommissioning & Environmental Sciences
  • Rachel Gaudet: ANS Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Carl Britt: ANS Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Colton Oldham: ANS Undergraduate Scholarship

Twelve nuclear engineering students traveled to Texas A&M University to take part in the American Nuclear Society (ANS) student conference held from April 9-11, 2015. The conference was attended by over 500 students and 200 professionals.

UT NE scholarship stole the show with the UTNE students bringing eight awards back to Knoxville:

  • Jerrad Auxier won “Best Graduate Presentation in Nonproliferation and Nuclear Safeguards.”
  • Seth Langford won “Best Graduate Presentation in Thermal Hydraulics and Fluids.”
    Langford also won another award for “Best Graduate Paper”.
  • Hannah Hale won an award for “Best Graduate Presentation Special Session: International Applications.”
  • Justin Knowles won an award for “Best Graduate Presentation in Detection and Measurement Technical Session.” Justin also won the “Service Commendation Award” for alerting the ANS about the unfair energy laws the EPA was trying to pass.
  • Remy Devoe won the “Service Commendation Award” for alerting the ANS about the unfair energy laws the EPA was trying to pass.
  • Kelsa Benensky won the “Best Graduate Presentation in Aerospace, Nuclear Science and Technology Technical Session.”
