A Message from the Dean

The Tickle College of Engineering has a long and distinguished tradition of excellence in education, beginning in 1838 when the first engineering course was offered at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Now in our 180th year, we are proud of the progress that the college has made, the opportunities we provide, the partnerships we have forged, and the achievements we will accomplish in the years to come.

Our faculty excels both in educating the country’s future engineers as well as conducting pioneering research that improves the quality of life for all of our citizens in areas including but not limited to energy, security, infrastructure, transportation, and biomedicine.

UT’s campus is located along the Tennessee River in the heart of Knoxville. We’re located less than an hour from the world-class facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the outdoor adventures that await at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

We have nearly doubled enrollment in the last decade and now have an undergraduate enrollment of more than 3,300 and graduate enrollment of more than 1,100. Our doctoral program is now the largest at UT, and one of the fastest growing among peer institutions.

Our faculty members include many internationally known experts in their respective fields, including five fellows of the National Academy of Engineering, eleven joint UT-ORNL Governor’s Chairs, one distinguished scientist, one university distinguished professor, eight endowed chairs, twenty-five endowed professorships, five endowed faculty fellows, three professors of practice, one TCE career development professorship, and the Wayne T. Davis Endowed Dean’s Chair in Engineering.

All 11 of our undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, and we offer many other nationally recognized programs.

As our world becomes increasingly oriented toward technology, the college is providing the inventive teaching and progressive research that will lead the way for the engineers of the future.
