Twin siblings Taylor and Tyler Patterson, both mechanical engineering majors, are roaring off after their final exams for a summer internship with BK Racing, a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team.

“They field the number 83 and 23 Cup cars,” said Taylor Patterson. “We will be working in teardown. This means that when the cars come back from the race track, we will strip the cars down to nothing but a bare chassis. We will then measure important components such as springs or shocks using a Romer arm to see if the parts can be reused for future races. We will also be helping in the design department, using SolidWorks to model brake ducts, brake hoses, etc. BK Racing also has their own 3D printers to print these parts.”

The Patterson crew also play roles on the UT EcoCAR3 team for their senior design project.

“This is helping us gain valuable knowledge with vehicle dynamics that will translate to the performance of the race cars that we are working on,” said Patterson.

Overall, two different racing teams offered the brothers internships. They thank Travis Greenlee, engineering career consultant in the UT Center for Career Development, for helping to review their resumes before they applied for their summer positions.

“This was a huge help because the guys in management at both race teams said that our resumes and cover letters were impressive and well written,” said Patterson. “I think it was a big help in landing us these opportunities.”
