The Jessica M. Morris Women in Engineering Program presents the Take Your Seat at the Table Speaker Series. This series will highlight how that no matter what “seat” you have at the table, you matter, and you are influencing something or someone. Hear and learn from real world leaders on how they “took their seat” and used their voice at the proverbial table to accomplish great things.

NOVEMBER’S Program:

Finding Your Voice When You’re Still Finding Yourself

Date: Thursday, November 19th

Time: 11am–12:30pm

Location: ZEC 423

What does it feel like to be the youngest person at the table? Sometimes getting a seat at the table is only the beginning. When you’re surrounded by people with more experience, more years of life, more years in the field, or more confidence, it can be easy to question whether you really belong there.

In this workshop, Kiara Williams will share lessons from her own experiences being the youngest person in the room and what she has learned about navigating self-doubt, building confidence, and finding people who supported her personal and professional growth. She’ll also talk about being open to coaching and feedback, why allies are so important, and how your leadership style will continue to change as you grow. Most importantly, she’ll talk about something she wishes more young leaders heard: you are allowed to grow while you lead. The person you are in your 20s doesn’t have to be the person you become, and that’s not a weakness. That’s part of the process.

This session is open to undergraduate and graduate engineering students.

About the Speaker

Kiara M. Williams, M.Ed., is an educator, leader, and learner, and she has spent a surprising amount of her career being the youngest person at the table. She’s excited to share some of her story with students and talk about what it really looks like to grow into the person you’re becoming.
