HITES12

Hosted by the Dwight Hutchins Office of Engineering Diversity Programs.

Initiated in 2001, HITES12 identifies and selects rising twelfth-grade students who are eager to tackle real-world engineering challenges through creative applications of math and science.

About the Program

HITES12 provides an opportunity to explore engineering and campus life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This immersive program will take place July 13-18, 2025. 

Participants will engage directly with UT faculty and staff, gaining foundational knowledge in engineering while experiencing college life firsthand. Participants will also compete in daily engineering challenges, collaborating with peers on engineering design projects.

This one-week residential program is offered at no major cost and includes enriching experiences: 

  • Orientation session
  • Team building and ice breaker exercises
  • College life and preparation session with UT staff
  • Engineering Discovery session hosted by engineering faculty and students
  • Laboratory demonstrations
  • Engineering challenges and group design projects
  • Counselor-to-peer mentoring 
  • Awards ceremony

What is HITES12?

HITES12 is a summer enrichment program designed for rising 12th grade students with a passion for engineering. Our mission is to ignite students’ interest in engineering by offering early exposure and hands-on preparation for scientific study and research. 

This immersive experience will spark a deeper interest in the world of engineering and open doors to diverse career opportunities. Throughout the program, participants will engage in dynamic engineering competitions, challenging them to apply their newfound knowledge in creative and practical ways. 

Who will teach the classes?

The classes are led by faculty and graduate students from the Tickle College of Engineering. Counselors will assist with program activities and supervision of the participants. 

What other activities will students be involved in?

Participants in HITES12 will delve into the diverse majors offered by the Tickle College of Engineering, gaining valuable insights into each field. 

They’ll also receive comprehensive preparation for college life, ensuring a smooth transition to higher education. Beyond academics, students will have the opportunity to forge new friendships, attend engaging engineering lectures, and actively participate in hands-on lab experiments. 

Who may apply?

All rising 12th grade students are encouraged to apply. All applicants must be enrolled or have completed Algebra II or Integrated Math and Geometry. 

What is the cost?

While there is no major cost associated with the HITES12 program, all necessary supplies will be provided by the college. Participants are required to pay only a $75 processing fee upon selection. 

What are the requirements to apply?

  • Must be a rising senior by the summer of 2025
  • High School transcript 
  • Minimum official ACT math score of 25 (SAT math score of 590)
  • Two teacher recommendations—math and science. Applicants have the option to include a STEM teacher recommendation
  • Video essay

When is the deadline?

Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2025. No faxes or emails will be accepted. Students will be notified of their acceptance by April 15, 2025.
