Who knew that to experience a colorful culture while enjoying such things as soaring mountains, spectacular ruins, and a one of a kind history all you have to do is visit Peru? I had no idea that Peru had all this and more to offer when I visited. Not only did I have the opportunity to see once in a lifetime destinations, like Machu Picchu, but I also got to leave a piece of myself behind after I left. I was a tourist, but more importantly, I was a volunteer. Our group left behind a total of fifteen cook stoves that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of just as many Peruvian families long after our visit.
I truly believe that the service element of these trips is what makes them so special. So often when visiting somewhere new, you’re only able to visit the polished and well-worn tourist destinations. However, these trips allow you to see a side of a culture and society that is often reserved for natives. Not only do you get to visit through this unique perspective, but you also get to forge deep and long-lasting relationships with the people whose lives you’re working to improve.
I most definitely walk away from this trip with unforgettable memories, exceptional experiences, and deep personal connections. Seeing the ruins of Saksaywaman, walking along the seaside cliffs of Lima, and the relationships I developed with the twenty-one people who also went are just of the few things I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
