Distinguished Lecture Series Fall 2015 Lineup

The Tickle College of Engineering’s fall slate of Distinguished Lecture Series events concluded recently, and by all accounts appeared to be extremely successful in their first venture online.

Now the college turns its attention to the spring slate of speakers, who—like the fall speakers—will present their topics in Room 622 of the Min H. Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building with an Internet simulcast.

“We had an extraordinary fall and we’re looking to continue that momentum this spring,” said Wayne Davis, dean of the college. “We have some of the top minds in the country coming to campus to discuss everything from water use and air quality to bioengineering and space exploration and concepts.”

The next round of presentations will begin on January 27, when University of Southern California Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Biokinesiology Francisco Valero-Cuevas comes to campus.

University of Michigan Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Nancy Love visits UT on March 9 for a discussion of water usage, treatment, and recovery, while North Carolina State University Professor of Air Quality Viney P. Aneja marks the third event of the spring on March 23 with a talk on air quality and atmospheric studies.

The spring slate concludes April 4, when NASA deputy manager and acclaimed author Les Johnson comes to UT to discuss advanced topics related to space flight, travel, and eventual colonization.

As always, those unable to attend can view a live webcast and pose questions to the presenters at the end of their discussions, while an archived video of each presentation will be available online for later viewing.

The series began online in earnest this past September 21, when Katherine Kuchenbecker of the University of Pennsylvania kicked things off with a discussion on telerobotic surgery.

When Rice University Adjunct Professor James McLurkin discussed multi-robot systems to a capacity crowd on October 5, the success of the series was evident.

William Sanders of the University of Illinois wrapped up the fall schedule to another large crowd on October 26 with his discussion of a smart, secure power grid.

“We have been pleased with the turnout, the reception, and the participation we have had for these events and look for continued success as we head into the spring,” said Davis.
