Shelby Carter joined the college this year as the new administrative specialist in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. She takes on the role following the retirement of longtime TCE colleague Karen Lowe.
In this position, Carter helps coordinate scholarships awarded through the college, and assists Associate Dean Ozlem Kilic with student matters. She also helps coordinate the annual Engineers Day on campus.
Carter received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and then her master’s degree in sport management from East Tennessee State University.
“I was also a collegiate athlete, I played softball for 17 years,” she said. “I bring that same motivation and drive to my career that helped me excel as a student athlete. I also feel that my time as a student athlete helped me to understand the student lifestyle and relate to the students I work with today.”
Carter also explained that she loves the TCE environment and people she is surrounded with each day.
“I respect the knowledgeable and intelligent people I get to work with every day, and it inspires me to do their best,” she said. “I also love waking up every day and helping people achieve their goals and better themselves.”
Her experiences and enjoyment of the college environment is what specifically drew her to work in the university setting.
“I love being surrounded by great minds and people who are hungry for knowledge and experience,” she said. “I really enjoy working with college students and helping them at any point along their journey to finding what makes them happy and successful.”
Carter is a Seattle, Washington native, but has called Tennessee home since moving here in 2013 to further her education and softball career. Outside of the office, Carter enjoys getting outdoors for fishing, walking her dogs, or just sitting by the pool in the summer with her fiancé David and their two Shih-Tzu’s, Max and Sam.
