Research Labs and Centers

In addition to working with Oak Ridge National Lab, we also partner with a number of on-campus research facilities, allowing our faculty and students to actively engage in cutting-edge research together. By fostering these relationships, we cultivate an environment where collaboration is not just encouraged, but fundamental to our mission.

Learn more about our on-campus partners:

Tennessee Ion Beam Materials Laboratory

The Tennessee Ion Beam Materials Laboratory (TIBML) is a UT core facility dedicated to fundamental research on ion-solid interactions, ion beam analysis, ion beam modification, and applied research on irradiation effects for nuclear and space applications.

Scintillation Materials Research Center

The Scintillation Materials Research Center is a unique multidisciplinary research facility formed by a collaboration of university and CTI Molecular Imaging. Its mission is to discover and develop new scintillation materials which will provide the foundation for the next generation of gamma-ray, x-ray, and neutron detectors for future medical imaging systems, homeland security inspection and monitoring systems, neutron and high energy particle physics experiments, and more.

Center for Materials Processing

Designated by the state of Tennessee as a Center of Excellence, the Center for Material Processing’s (CMP) research efforts focus on the control of material properties through their composition and molecular structure as well as how these factors relate to materials processing. Participating researchers come from all engineering disciplines.

Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

The Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM) builds upon a broad and growing research partnership between the university and ORNL. Together the two institutions house some of the world’s most advanced facilities in neutron scattering, nanophase materials, and high-performance computing.
