Four students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering traveled to the 2024 International Materials, Applications & Technologies (IMAT) Conference in Cleveland, Ohio to participate in the Domesday Competition sponsored by ASM International. The University of Tennessee’s team consisted of Marlena Alexander, Jakob Scroggins, Fabriana Prawiranata, and Megan Gillespie. The faculty advisor was Professor Claudia Rawn.
The team received the “Best Aesthetics Award” for their project, which was a geodesic dome constructed of stainless steel and carbon fiber, was named Li’l Domey IV.
“We are proud to have represented the University of Tennessee and to be ambassadors of our Materials Science Engineering program at an international level,” the students said. “This project gave us the opportunity to move from an idea all the way to a product while putting into practice the engineering design principles we have learned in class. We thank the MSE department and the Center of Materials Processing for enabling our growth as young professionals.”
The team was happy to share the credit with the group of faculty and staff at UT who helped them bring the project together. They put acknowledgements on their poster that read, “The team thanks Dr. Jerry Egeland for his help throughout the fabrication of the dome. We also thank Dr. David Harper for his design insights, Caleb Campbell and Dr. Bradley Jared for assistance printing, as well as Dr. Philip Rack and the Center for Materials Processing for their support. Lastly, a special thanks to Professor Mary Kocak.”
