The University of Tennessee recently hosted the biannual meeting of the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC). The event, which took place July 28–31, was an opportunity for students, faculty, and industry members to gather and hear updates on current research projects, discuss the state of the field, and develop future projects and partnerships.
The Ma2JIC is an NSF-funded Industrial University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), with its headquarters at Ohio State University. UT is a satellite site, directed by Claudia Rawn and Yanfei Gao, who are both professors in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
During the biannual meeting, Josh Burgess (BS ’08, MS ’10, PhD ’14), president-elect of the American Welding Society (AWS), was invited to give a plenary talk. Rawn also presented Burgess with MSE’s Outstanding Alumnus Award. TCE Dougherty Award winner Nancy Cole (BS ’63, MS ’88), a former president of AWS, was also in attendance.
UT’s I/UCRC satellite site has a wide range of expertise from novel processing to modern characterization to performance analysis. Over the last 14 years, the site has received research funding in the multi-millions for projects that include novel additive manufacturing methods, quality and structural integrity in energy and power generation industries, critical materials processing techniques.
