Gilbert Named 40 Under 40 Class by Knox News

Dustin Gilbert, an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been named to the 40 Under 40 class of 2024 by the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

The Knox News 40 Under 40 class honors 40 young professionals who are “dedicated to leading by example in both their careers and their communities. Through their professional accomplishments and selfless acts of service, these 40 recipients exemplify what it means to lead, innovate and achieve in East Tennessee.”

Gilbert joined the UT faculty in 2018. He performs investigations of nanoscale phenomena, with a focus on magnetism and spin phenomena. Gilbert’s current research has leveraged the unique capabilities of neutron scattering and synchrotron X-rays together to advance the understanding of new emergent fields, including magneto-ionics, skyrmions, and topological insulators.

“This is a huge honor. In academics, research and teaching excellence are at the top of our list, but outside of our specific research field and our students, very few people have the ability to observe these efforts or their successes. This is particularly true for young and early career faculty,” Gilbert said. “On top of this, Knoxville has had such significant growth in recent years, and there are more people under 40 doing amazing things locally than ever before. It makes this award even more flattering and encourages me to do the best that I can for my students, community, and family.”
