The University of Tennessee’s Makers Club is using 3D printing to create prosthetic limbs, with their first project benefiting engineering student and club member Riley Toll.
Toll, a freshman born without one hand due to a congenital condition, collaborated with fellow club members to design and build her own prosthetic hand.
The idea for the project emerged when Toll attended a Makers Club interest meeting and shared her desire for a printed prosthetic. That moment sparked the team’s work, led in part by club vice president Alex Weber.
Over several weeks, Toll and other students in the Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering Department worked together to design, customize, and assemble the 3D-printed hand, which she’ll take home this Christmas.
