Romeo Sephyrin Fono-Tamo works with a Wabash, a 150-ton capacity large press, that makes panels from sheet molding compound in the Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF) lab.

Department Research Areas

Manufacturing

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering includes several faculty lighting the way for advanced manufacturing via a variety of materials and methods:

  • Additive manufacturing enables parts and geometries that cannot be accomplished via traditional, conventional manufacturing approaches.
  • Our faculty investigate the physical and chemical processes that affect the properties of finished parts from polymer, metal, and ceramic-polymer additive manufacturing.
  • Researchers push the limits on high precision machining by advancing our understanding of mechanical vibration.

Faculty in this research area collaborate with industry partners and are often supported by state and federal sponsors for commercial- and defense-related applications. Researchers working at UT have access to leading researchers and cutting-edge manufacturing equipment located at IAMM, IACMI, and Innovation South.
