UTSI faculty member Philip Kreth works with two grad students looking at the fluid dynamics around their test using a Mach 5 Wind Tunnel.

Department Research Areas

Thermal, Fluid, and Structural Dynamics

Faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering apply engineering principles to a wide range of thermal, fluid, and structural systems. Research activities include both experimental and computational/theoretical investigations. Our faculty are working on research in some of the following areas:

  • Investigating the aerodynamics of aircraft, including rotorcraft and hypersonic systems that experience extreme velocity and temperature.
  • Advancing knowledge in novel methods to investigate combustion processes or test materials and structures in advanced wind tunnels.
  • Researching fluid dynamics and heat transfer at the nano- to micro-scale, processes that affect manufacturing, material properties, space systems, HVAC, and more.

Our faculty collaborate amongst on multidisciplinary teams around the college and in a variety of fundamental and applied research communities. Their research is often supported through industry partnerships and government sponsorships
