Muhammad Waseem is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee–Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII), holding a joint appointment with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

He received his PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from University of Virginia. His research focuses on the integration of intelligent control, digital twins, and smart manufacturing within complex industrial systems.

His work leverages advanced methodologies, including Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and Generative AI/Large Language Models (LLMs), to optimize production planning and enhance operational efficiency.

Dr. Waseem’s work extends to energy-efficient control strategies and the optimization of integrated microgrid-manufacturing systems. Additionally, through a research collaboration with General Motors, he developed digital twin surrogates and machine learning models to enhance automotive assembly line performance. These contributions earned him the MAE Outstanding Graduate Research Award and the Link Lab Distinguished Research Award from the University of Virginia.
