Tyler Newsom: Student Report from 2018 Alternative Spring Break to Nicaragua

Traveling to a foreign country is a fun and interesting experience.  From enjoying the native food to interacting with natives of that country, everything is new and requires you to be open-minded about everything. With that in mind, our trip to Nicaragua was a blast, and I would recommend it to anyone who might be interested in going.  The following describes what we did, and where we went while we were in this fantastic country.

The first place that we visited in Nicaragua was the city of Granada.  The first day that we were there we learned about the history of the city, looked at some local artists, and churches.  For instance, the city had been burned to the ground on multiple occasions resulting in the city having a wide range of architecture throughout it, and even in the same building as renovations were done.  At the end of this day, we went to the summit of Masaya, which is a volcano, and got to see a lava lake that is one of six in the world.  On the second day, we went biking through the city heading for an island that we would spend the rest of the day at.  This island had a pool, kayaks, and a tennis court that we could use while we were there.

The second place that we visited in Nicaragua was the city of San Juan del Sur.  The first day that we were there we got to relax and enjoy the beach for the entire day.  On the second day, we went to a local ranch, where we went horseback riding and lounged around a pool.

The third and final place that we visited in Nicaragua was Ometepe Island, which can only be accessed by a 45-minute long ferry ride.  This island was formed in the shape of a figure-8 with two volcanoes on either end.  On this island we stayed at a hotel called Charco Verde, which was on a wildlife reservation and learned about some old folklore of the area.  While on this island we volunteered at a farm called bona fide, where we learned about permaculture and how we can implement that into our daily lives.

In summary, it was an extremely enjoyable, activity-filled trip which I am grateful for having been a part.
