History and Application of Lean and Quality in Japan

This engineering-focused program takes students to the birthplace of many of the quality and lean manufacturing principles that continue to shape industry today, including the work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming and the Toyota Production System. Participants will visit leading companies with strong connections to Tennessee, such as JTEKT, DENSO, and Nissan, gaining firsthand insight into global manufacturing practices. As the only faculty-led study abroad opportunity in Japan—and currently the only faculty-led program in Asia—for UT Knoxville engineering students, this course offers a unique international learning experience. Course lectures, site visits, and activities are intentionally integrated to reinforce students’ understanding of lean manufacturing, quality assurance, and continuous improvement while connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications.

Yokohama, Japan

Located in the heart of Japan, Nagoya is a thriving center of industry, innovation, and culture. Known as the home of Toyota and a leader in manufacturing and engineering, Nagoya offers students a unique opportunity to experience Japan’s technological excellence while exploring its rich history and traditions. Visitors can discover iconic attractions such as Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine, and the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. With a vibrant food scene, welcoming atmosphere, and convenient access to cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, Nagoya provides an ideal setting for cultural immersion, academic enrichment, and unforgettable study abroad experiences.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan’s vibrant capital, offers an exciting blend of tradition, innovation, and endless opportunities for students. As one of the world’s largest and most influential cities, Tokyo is known for its cutting-edge technology, renowned universities, rich cultural heritage, and safe, efficient public transportation system.

Students studying in Tokyo can experience everything from ancient temples and tranquil gardens to bustling shopping districts, world-famous cuisine, and futuristic cityscapes. Neighborhoods such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Akihabara showcase the city’s energetic atmosphere, while historic areas like Asakusa provide a glimpse into Japan’s rich past.

Academics

The course will be conducted over three weeks in Nagoya and Tokyo, Japan with easy access to both city and industrial zones. The course will focus on lean manufacturing principles, historical figures in lean and quality, and cutting-edge technologies, while immersing students in Japanese culture. The course interweaves classroom lectures, visits to leading companies, historical sites and museums related to lean and quality, and opportunities to explore the philosophy of continuous improvement. The topics and learnings are applicable for all of the College of Engineering disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

• Deepen awareness on the history and application of lean manufacturing and quality 
  principles that originated in Japan
• Develop an insight into the Japanese culture through a direct immersion into major 
  metropolitan cities and surrounding areas, including 
• Visit Japanese companies that have direct ties to Tennessee

Housing & Meals

Students will be housed in a double-occupancy hotel room during their stay in Yokohama and Nagoya. Housing is included in the program fee. Breakfast and two dinners will be provided during this program. Meals are included in the program fee.
