Bjorn Carlson
During my time abroad at the University of Sydney, I primarily took courses focused on industrial engineering and project management. The academics at Usyd were a bit more intense and challenged me to adapt to new teaching styles and standards. Usyd also has a large international student body, specifically from Asia, so it was cool to be involved in group projects and classwork with students from all over the world almost everyday
Outside of the classroom, almost every weekend my friends and I explored the city by going to different pubs, restaurants, and concerts or by heading to nearby beaches to swim, fish, surf, and even camp by the shore. Sydney offered a great balance of energetic city life, while also having tons of cool outdoor spots just a quick bus or train ride away. Beyond Sydney, we were also able to travel all along Australia’s Coast: exploring rainforests, cliffs, and other cities like Byron Bay, Cairns, and Melbourne. These trips were awesome and allowed us to see tons of cool wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, sea turtles, as well as experience the different vibes of other parts of the country.
During this time abroad, I not only further developed my academics but also my intercultural communication skills, gaining a deeper appreciation for global connections. Overall, my experience enriched me both personally and professionally, equipping me to thrive in diverse environments and tackle future challenges with creativity, empathy, and an international outlook.
