{"id":2198,"date":"2026-09-09T14:03:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T18:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=2198"},"modified":"2026-09-09T14:03:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T18:03:25","slug":"uts-mse-team-featured-in-cast-in-steel-youtube-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/uts-mse-team-featured-in-cast-in-steel-youtube-series\/","title":{"rendered":"UT\u2019s MSE Team Featured in Cast in Steel YouTube Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A senior design team from the University of Tennessee\u2019s Department of Materials Science and Engineering is featured in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=95vrpn4OXMc\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">YouTube TV series about the 2025 <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cast in Steel<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> competition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Team Sword Washington from MSE placed in the top five in the international competition, which challenges university teams to design, cast, and test a fully functional metal tool or weapon entirely from scratch.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jakob Scroggins (BS \u201925), Fabriana Prawiranata (BS \u201925), Nolan Lees (BS \u201925), Daniel Rassmussen (BS \u201926), and Davis Granger (BS \u201925) had to make a replica of George Washington\u2019s sword for the 2025 competition. Cameras followed them throughout the process for season 1 of the YouTube series.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI\u2019m really proud that our team had the opportunity to represent the University of Tennessee and MSE in the series, especially after making it all the way to the finals,\u201d Rassmussen said. \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cast in Steel<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> pushed us outside our normal comfort zones as MSE students and was a truly multidisciplinary experience, giving us the chance to work through everything from selecting the alloy and heat treatment to designing the sword and the molds, and ultimately putting our work to the test in front of thousands of people online.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the season finale, teams from UT, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Pittsburgh State University, and Youngstown State University went head-to-head in the final rounds of testing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">David Baker and Ben Abbott, expert judges and master bladesmiths on the History Channel TV series <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Forged in Fire<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, served as the expert evaluators for the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cast in Steel<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> competition.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s great to showcase how hard the students worked throughout this competition and it\u2019s great publicity for UT,\u201d said MSE Assistant Professor Dustin Gilmer, who was the team\u2019s faculty advisor.\u00a0 \u201cThe <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cast in Steel<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> competition gives our students hands-on experience and industry experience, because they work closely with the sponsors.
