{"id":2003,"date":"2026-05-14T15:47:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T19:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=2003"},"modified":"2026-05-15T14:01:54","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T18:01:54","slug":"seven-tce-students-awarded-nsf-graduate-research-fellowships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/seven-tce-students-awarded-nsf-graduate-research-fellowships\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven TCE Students Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seven students from the Tickle College of Engineering have been selected for the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/opportunities\/grfp-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)<\/a>, one of the nation\u2019s most prestigious awards supporting graduate research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>NSF awarded 2,500 graduate research fellowships for the 2026\u20132027 academic year to outstanding graduate students across the United States who are pursuing research-based degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship program provides each student with a three-year annual stipend of $37,000 and a $16,000 allowance, over five years, for tuition and fees paid to the institution.<\/p>\n<p>The TCE students who received the award for their field of study are:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Avery Stubbings<\/h2>\n<p><em>Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\nThe Winnipeg, Manitoba native is a graduate student studying computer engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to win this award,\u201d Stubbings said. \u201cIt will give me the support and freedom to explore research areas I am interested in, with the hopes of bringing customizable and private AI applications to everyday people on extremely affordable and resource efficient hardware.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2005\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Stubbings-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Alexa Andershock<\/h2>\n<p><em>Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Franklin, Tennessee native will graduate this spring with a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award is a testament to the support and mentorship I have received from my engineering peers and professors at UT over the last four years,\u201d Andershock said. \u201cThe fellowship will help fund my PhD studies in engineering education, where I will be researching the influences on student persistence in undergraduate engineering programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2006\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Andershock-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Ethan Naugle<\/h2>\n<p><em>Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Knoxville native earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in computer engineering from UT in 2025. The fellowship will support his research, which involves creating building blocks for biologically inspired computer architectures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very\u00a0grateful and honored to receive this award. This is a wonderful\u00a0opportunity thatgives me the freedom to\u00a0fully focus on research topics that I am most\u00a0passionate about,\u201d Naugle said. \u201cSome of those topics include artificial intelligence hardware, neuromorphic computing, cryogenic device physics, and quantum computing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2007\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/headshot_ethan_naugle.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Jocelyn Hess<\/h2>\n<p><em>Department of Materials Science and Engineering<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Seymour, Tennessee native will graduate this spring with a bachelor\u2019s degree in materials science and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled to be chosen for this recognition,\u201d Hess said. \u201cI am so thankful to everyone who has stood by my side over the last four years because I couldn\u2019t have done it without them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2008\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Hess-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Daniel Perkins<\/h2>\n<p><em>Bredesen Center<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Knoxville native is a graduate student in data science and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my research, I am developing an AI-powered evacuation system for active shooter scenarios,\u201d Perkins said. \u201cThe system combines computer vision, graph neural networks, and deep reinforcement learning to track threats in real time and guide evacuees along the safest and fastest routes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2009\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Perkins-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Ella Williams<\/h2>\n<p><em>Bredesen Center<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Knoxville native is graduate student studying energy science and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to receive this fellowship supporting my research on energy-dense solid-state batteries through the advancement of lithium metal anodes,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThis fellowship will support standardization and optimization of these critical materials through collaboration with leading researchers and world-class facilities, under the guidance of Dr. Guang Yang in the Energy Storage and Conversion Group at ORNL.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2010\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Williams-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">David Levy<\/h2>\n<p><em>Bredesen Center<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The Westport, Connecticut native is a first-year graduate student studying energy science and engineering. The fellowship will support his research on the characterization of color center defects in diamonds under various environmental conditions to engineer better sensors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am extremely thankful to my adviser and former professors who wrote letters of recommendation and to my peers who helped proofread my application,\u201d Levy said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-third column \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2011\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/NSFGRF-Levy-crop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<br class=\"clearshortcode\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<h2>About the NSF Graduate Research Fellowships<\/h2>\n<p>NSF GFRP recipients were selected from a highly competitive pool of nearly 14,000 applicants nationwide, representing all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, based on their intellectual merit and broader impacts, including their potential to contribute to scientific innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 1952, GRFP has supported over 70,000 graduate research fellows, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in research and innovation.
