Roberts Scholarship at the 2024 International Materials, Applications &amp; Technologies Conference on October 1.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Presented by the ASM Materials Education Foundation, the $6,000 George A. Roberts scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student who demonstrates exemplary academic and personal achievements, interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering, as well as financial<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1641 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Jocelyn-Hess-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jocelyn Hess in a blue lab coat and protective eye gear. \" width=\"245\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Jocelyn-Hess-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Jocelyn-Hess.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/> need. The scholarship was established in 1995 through a contribution by George A. Roberts, past president of ASM and retired CEO of Teledyne.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hess accepted the award at the IMAT awards luncheon in Cleveland, Ohio. Her trip was funded by the ASM Scholarship Foundation and UT Department of Materials Science and Engineering.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI am so honored to receive\u202fthe George A. Roberts Scholarship. It goes to support \u2018students serving as role models in the field.\u2019 To be labeled as a\u202frole model in the field of materials means so much to me,\u201d Hess said. \u201cI am passionate about materials and always aspire to be someone others can look up to, in both research and life.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hess has taken advantage of all the opportunities provided at UT. She spent this past summer participating in an internship through the DAAD RISE Germany program at the German Aerospace Center in the Institute of Materials Physics in Space in Cologne, Germany. In the summer of 2023, she took part in the Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program run by the United States Department of Energy. Hess worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hess, who is minoring in leadership studies, has performed undergraduate research with UT Governor\u2019s Chair in Advanced Composites Manufacturing Professor Uday Vaidya and Oluwafemi Oyedeji at ORNL. She is an active member of the Society of Women Engineers and Material Advantage clubs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cUT has provided space for me to gain accolades and position myself to receive\u202fthis scholarship,\u201d Hess said. \u201cThe Department\u202fof Materials Science and Engineering is very supportive of students doing undergraduate research and getting involved in professional organizations.
