{"id":1636,"date":"2024-10-02T09:12:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T13:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=1636"},"modified":"2024-10-02T16:19:21","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T20:19:21","slug":"tce-alum-loyd-receives-doe-early-career-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/tce-alum-loyd-receives-doe-early-career-award\/","title":{"rendered":"TCE Alum Loyd Receives DOE Early Career Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Matthew Loyd (BS\/MSE \u201915, MS\/NE \u201817, PhD\/MSE \u201819) was recently selected for an Early Career Research Program award by the Department of Energy\u2019s Office of Science. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Loyd, an R&amp;D scientist in the Neutron Technologies Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was selected by the Basic Energy Sciences program for his proposal, \u201cDevelopment of a Novel High-Count-Rate, High-Resolution Neutron Cam<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">era with Advanced Gamma Discrimination Capabilities.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The detector will be based on current camera technologies that convert low-energy neutrons into thousands of visible photons and an array of silicon photomultipliers that will identify the neutrons\u2019 positions. Improvements in detector hardware, firmware and software will allow for simultaneous<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1637 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Matthew-Loyd-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Matthew Loyd\" width=\"253\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Matthew-Loyd-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/Matthew-Loyd.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0neutron detection at separate locations on the detector at count rates greater than one million neutrons per second. The detector\u2019s ability to reject gamma radiation, which is unavoidably produced during neutron scattering experiments, will enable observing extremely weak but scientifically important data signals in many experiments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u202fam honored to have been awarded this prestigious grant by the Department of Energy,\u201d Loyd said. \u201cThe five years of funding will allow me to pursue advanced detector technologies, and to develop a state-of-the-art neutron detector that will enable the next generation of experiments at DOE\u2019s scientific user facilities, the Spallation Neutron Source and The High-Flux Isotope Reactor.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DOE has selected 91 early career scientists nationwide, employed across 12 DOE national laboratories and 50 universities, to receive a combined $138 million across five years to cover salary and research expenses. Since its inception in 2010, the program has granted 961 awards, with 631 awards to university researchers and 330 awards to national laboratory researchers.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A researcher must be an untenured, tenure-track assistant or associate professor at a US academic institution or a full-time employee at a DOE national laboratory or Office of Science user facility to be eligible. Each project award is subject to final grant and contract negotiations between DOE and the awardee.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI feel that my time at UT prepared me well for the challenges of working at a DOE basic science laboratory,\u201d Loyd said. \u201cI especially appreciate the ability for me to get a nuclear engineering master\u2019s degree enroute to my materials science and engineering PhD.
