{"id":1566,"date":"2024-07-22T10:58:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T14:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=1566"},"modified":"2024-07-22T18:55:08","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T22:55:08","slug":"melcher-to-receive-2025-ieee-marie-sklodowska-curie-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/melcher-to-receive-2025-ieee-marie-sklodowska-curie-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Melcher to Receive 2025 IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-two years ago, Research Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/ne.utk.edu\/people\/charles-l-melcher\/\">Chuck Melcher<\/a> published work characterizing a new scintillating crystal known as LSO.<\/p>\n<p>Today, LSO is the top scintillator used in positron-emission tomography (PET), a medical tool used to diagnose patients with brain or heart conditions and metabolic disorders like cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exciting to see my research having a global impact on healthcare,\u201d said Melcher, who holds a joint faculty position in the nuclear engineering and materials science departments and serves as director of UT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/smrc.utk.edu\/\">Scintillation Materials Research Center<\/a>. \u201cCancer and Alzheimer\u2019s remain major challenges, but progress is being made, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scintillators emit light when struck by radiation. For a PET scan, patients are injected with a radioactive tracer that travels to the organ or tissue of interest. As the radionuclide decays, it emits gamma rays that strike the scintillator, producing light that is translated into the scan image.<\/p>\n<p>LSO\u2019s light responses are uniquely bright and quick, resulting in highly sensitive and efficient PET scans.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of the scintillator\u2019s discovery, development, and lasting impact on PET technology, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.org\/\">Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers<\/a> (IEEE) will honor Melcher with the 2025 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 2008 and sponsored by the IEEE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ieee-npss.org\/\">Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society<\/a> (NPSS), the annual Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award honors scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of nuclear and plasma science and engineering.
