{"id":1524,"date":"2024-05-13T14:16:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T18:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=1524"},"modified":"2024-05-14T14:21:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T18:21:04","slug":"four-tce-faculty-elected-aaas-fellows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/four-tce-faculty-elected-aaas-fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"Four TCE Faculty Elected AAAS Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four faculty members from the Tickle College of Engineering have been elected fellows of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\">American Association for Advancement Sciences<\/a>\u00a0(AAAS), the world\u2019s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals.<\/p>\n<p>UT-ORNL Governor\u2019s Chair Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mse.utk.edu\/people\/rigoberto-advincula\/\">Rigoberto Advincula<\/a>, UT-ORNL Distinguished Scientist\/Professor Director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mse.utk.edu\/people\/takeshi-egami\/\">Takeshi Egami<\/a>, Weston Fulton Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mse.utk.edu\/people\/sergei-v-kalinin\/\">Sergei Kalinin<\/a>, and Dongarra Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.utk.edu\/people\/michela-taufer\/\">Michela Taufer<\/a>\u00a0are among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/page\/2023-fellows?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D59488664994355325662138902423656035161%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1713473630\">2023 class<\/a>\u00a0of 502 scientists, engineers, and innovators across 24 AAAS disciplinary sections to receive the honor.<\/p>\n<p>AAAS Fellows are a distinguished cadre of scientists, engineers and innovators who have been recognized for their achievements across disciplines ranging from research, teaching and technology, to administration in academia, industry, and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public. The AAAS Fellows program is celebrating its 150th anniversary.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 30%; height: 1px; margin: 40px auto; border-bottom: 8px solid #ff8200;\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h4\"><strong>Takeshi Egami<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Department of Materials Science and Engineering<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43476\" src=\"\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/takeshi-egami-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Takeshi Egami\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Egami is a UT-ORNL Distinguished Scientist, professor, and director emeritus of the Shull Wollan Center\/Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences. He is a past recipient of the American Crystallographic Association\u2019s Bertram Eugene Warren Diffraction Physics Award.<\/p>\n<p>Early in his career, Egami realized that most theories and experimental tools in condensed-matter physics and materials science were developed for crystalline materials. \u201cBut liquids, glasses, and humans, too, are not crystalline. Water in particular is vital for life, yet it\u2019s still a mystery in its physics,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is an important target for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Egami developed new approaches to study the atomic structure and dynamics in disordered systems using X-ray and neutron scattering by transforming the data from reciprocal space to real space. He has also developed theories on liquids and glasses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful to UT, ORNL and the Department of Energy for enabling me to\u00a0focus on fundamental liquid-state physics,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe it\u2019s important to continue fundamental yet out-of-the-box research to take us to the next stage. Bringing the study of disordered systems into the realm of biology is a new horizon for exploration.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 30%; height: 1px; margin: 40px auto; border-bottom: 8px solid #ff8200;\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h4\"><strong>Sergei Kalinin<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Department of Materials Science and Engineering<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43474\" src=\"\/mse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/sergei-kalinin-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sergei Kalinin\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kalinin also serves as the chief scientist working in artificial intelligence and machine learning for the physical sciences at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Before joining UT, he spent a year with the Amazon special projects team, exploring real-world industry challenges firsthand. Earlier, he spent 20 years at ORNL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI use machine learning to solve problems in physics,\u201d Kalinin said. \u201cConnecting machine learning with real-world materials and devices requires a combination of skill sets. I have been very lucky to work with strong collaborative teams at the national labs and at UT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether,\u00a0we are integrating machine learning and microscopy\u00a0to enable a new generation of materials and accelerate the discovery process.
