{"id":1514,"date":"2024-03-27T13:56:09","date_gmt":"2024-03-27T17:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/?p=1514"},"modified":"2024-05-14T13:58:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T17:58:14","slug":"kalinin-to-receive-microanalysis-society-award-for-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mse\/kalinin-to-receive-microanalysis-society-award-for-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Kalinin to Receive Microanalysis Society Award for Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-mas.org\/\">Microanalysis Society<\/a>\u00a0(MAS) has announced Weston Fulton Professor\u00a0<a href=\"\/mse\/faculty\/sergei-kalinin\/\">Sergei Kalinin<\/a>\u00a0as the winner of the 2024\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-mas.org\/awards\/peter-duncumb-award\/\">Peter Duncumb Award for Excellence in Microanalysis<\/a>. Each year, the award honors one MAS member who has sustained an outstanding level of achievement in the field of microanalysis\u2014the investigation of matter at the micrometer scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very high-level recognition,\u201d Kalinin said. \u201cThe MAS is very specialized in microscopy, which is the core of my interest. It is very well aligned with how I see myself and what I try to accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 20 years, Kalinin has distinguished himself across the three areas recognized by the Peter Duncumb Award: technical accomplishment, leadership, and educational activities.<\/p>\n<p>Kalinin\u2019s technical work has focused on combining microscopy and machine learning (ML) methods. Fifteen years ago, he began applying ML to microscope data analysis; more recently, he has trained ML agents to autonomously conduct experiments, pushing the bounds of atomic-level microscopy.<\/p>\n<p>While working at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0(ORNL) in 2006, Kalinin started teaching microscopy workshops, establishing himself as a regional leader in the implementation of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). His tremendously popular workshops expanded, leading to an international series. PFM is now an integral part of many meetings of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ieee-uffc.org\/symposia\/isaf\">International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics<\/a>\u00a0(ISAF), which is sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.org\/\">IEEE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kalinin also freely shares his expertise with the public. In addition to his many appearances on educational YouTube channels, Kalinin maintains his own channel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@mnmicroscopymachinelearnin4427\">Machine Learning in the Nanoworld<\/a>, which has hundreds of hours of free content devoted to integrating ML with multiple types of microscopy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to share knowledge,\u201d he said. \u201cPart of the reason I left ORNL, and ultimately came to UT, was the opportunity to share my knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kalinin will officially receive the Peter Duncumb Award plaque and accompanying $2,000 prize during the opening plenary of the MAS annual meeting, Microscopes and Microanalysis.
