Qualifying publications rank in the top 1% for citations in their field (or fields) and publication years, as determined by Clarivate\u2019s Web of Science citation index.<\/p>\n<p>Because researchers must have multiple such papers and fulfil other criteria to be selected, only 0.01% of global researchers earn the title of Highly Cited Researcher; in 2023, fewer than 7,200 scientists were recognized.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>MSE researchers recognized in 2023<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>John Fisher Professor and Ivan Racheff Chair of Excellence\u00a0<a href=\"\/mse\/people\/faculty\/peter-liaw\/\"><strong>Peter Liaw<\/strong><\/a>, whose research focuses on the nondestructive evaluation of fatigue and fracture, as well as life-prediction methodologies, of advanced materials like high-entropy alloys and intermetallics. Liaw was recognized for his top-cited research in the field of materials science.<\/li>\n<li>Jerry and Kay Henry Endowed Professor\u00a0<a href=\"\/mse\/people\/faculty\/david-mandrus\/\"><strong>David Mandrus<\/strong><\/a>, whose work focuses on the growth, discovery, and characterization of new quantum materials. Mandrus was recognized for his top-cited research in the field of physics.<\/li>\n<li>UT-ORNL Joint Faculty Associate Professor\u00a0<a href=\"\/mse\/people\/faculty\/joint-faculty\/jiaqiang-yan\/\"><strong>Jiaqiang Yan<\/strong><\/a>, whose research focuses on the design, growth, and characterization of novel materials with unusual electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties.
