Since 1897, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been continuously accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master\u2019s, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. ABET Accreditation<\/h2>\n

The BS in Materials Science and Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission(s) of ABET<\/a>, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Materials, Metallurgical, Ceramics and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.<\/p>\n

Program Educational Objectives<\/h3>\n

The educational objectives of the program for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering are:<\/p>\n

  • Our graduates will successfully perform the work of materials scientists and engineers in industry, academia, and government.<\/li>\n
  • Our graduates will successfully complete competitive postgraduate education programs.<\/li>\n
  • Our graduates will contribute to their disciplines and to society and will advance to leadership roles in their chosen career field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Student Outcomes<\/h3>\n

    Before our students receive the Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering, they will have demonstrated:<\/p>\n

    • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.<\/li>\n
    • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.<\/li>\n
    • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.<\/li>\n
    • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.<\/li>\n
    • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.<\/li>\n
    • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.<\/li>\n
