Andrew Wereszczak, a distinguished scientist and joint faculty professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, recently received the top award from the ceramics committee of ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials.  

The Advanced Ceramics Award was granted to Wereszczak in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of advanced ceramics and leadership as chair of ASTM International subcommittees on ceramic matrix composites and applications. 

Wereszczak’s three-decade career as a ceramic engineer and scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has focused on the analysis, testing, and processing of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. His work has influenced material and structural improvements for a variety of applications in energy, manufacturing, defense, and national security.  

Wereszczak, who joined the UT faculty in 2014, is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society and has received multiple awards for his work. He earned his bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University in New York and his PhD in materials science and engineering from the University of Delaware.
