{"id":673,"date":"2018-04-16T10:56:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T14:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/?p=673"},"modified":"2025-07-09T10:59:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T14:59:59","slug":"3rd-annual-wu-student-presentation-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/news\/3rd-annual-wu-student-presentation-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd Annual Wu Student Presentation Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tullahoma, TN \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsi.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Tennessee Space Institute<\/a> held its 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Annual \u201cWu Student Presentation Competition,\u201d on March 28, 2018.\u00a0Twelve students participated with each allotted a 10 minute time slot, followed by a question and answer session.\u00a0The 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0place winner received a $2,000 travel grant, the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0place winner received a $1,000 travel grant.\u00a0The travel grants are for students to gain additional experience and to sharpen presentation skills through attending a conference of their choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First place went to Matthew Schwartz from Nashville, TN who is currently working on a MS in aerospace engineering.\u00a0His presentation was entitled, \u201cA Numerical Study on Thermochemical Effects of Hypersonic Spheres using US3D\u201d.\u00a0Second place went to Stefen Lindorfer from Texas, previously raised in Germany.\u00a0He is currently working on a PhD in aerospace engineering.\u00a0His presentation was entitled, \u201cBoundary-Layer Thickness Effects on a cylinder-Generated Shock-Wave-Turbulent Boundary-Layer Interaction\u201d.\u00a0Professor John Schmisseur is the advisor to both students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This competition, named for Susan and Jimmy Wu who were the first husband and wife team hired as faculty members of the Space Institute in 1965. During their more than fifty-five years of combined service to UTSI and the aerospace community, their contributions were significant in areas of academia, scientific research and community outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A generous donation from a UTSI graduate alumni, wishing to remain anonymous, made this competition possible. The objective for starting the competition was to help students develop presentation skills while learning about various fields of research. Competition, open to all currently enrolled UTSI full-time and part-time MS and PhD students, was an open forum where graduate students presented their research in a competition-based format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winning presentations were determined by a panel of outside judges.\u00a0This year\u2019s judges were James Masters, Alan Hale, Kimberly Eck, and Jarvis Caffery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, seven Graduate Research Assistants displayed departmental posters highlighting their research during the competition.\u00a0Previous winners of the Wu Competition gave presentations about the conferences they attended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UTSI hosted the third annual Wu
