{"id":562,"date":"2018-04-05T15:54:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T19:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/?p=562"},"modified":"2025-07-07T16:08:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T20:08:13","slug":"alumni-spotlight-david-moseley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/news\/alumni-spotlight-david-moseley\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Spotlight: David Moseley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2017, one month after receiving his master\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,\u00a0David Moseley<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>moved to Hartford, Connecticut, and began working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prattwhitney.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Pratt &amp; Whitney<\/a> as an F100 Component Improvement Program Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moseley\u2019s responsibilities include leading cross-functional teams to ensure the safety, reliability, and supportability of nearly 4,000 F100\u00adPW-229 and F100-PW-220 engines in services, and leveraging diverse engineering teams to identify, design, and implement new engine improvements for the US Air Force as well as 22 nations worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A native of Louisville, Tennessee, Moseley is no longer in close proximity to family and has to endure cold New England weather but is thankful to be working for a great company and doing what he loves: engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing an engineer requires a unique mixture of creativity, technical know-how, and determination to solve complex problems,\u201d said Moseley. \u201cWorking in this type of environment is incredibly satisfying as those efforts yield tangible benefits. This is especially true working within Military Engines at Pratt &amp; Whitney where the results of our efforts directly impact the strength of our nation and the safety of America\u2019s military men and women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moseley didn\u2019t always have the dream of being an engineer. In fact, it wasn\u2019t even on his radar until after he had received a bachelor\u2019s degree in business and was working as an entrepreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moseley started a tech business to improve the efficiency and emissions of internal combustion. After some set-backs and product failure, it became clear he needed to understand the technology before the business could be successful. It was this need that led him to the realization that he was an engineer at heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt became apparent a massive gap existed between the engineered design and the needs of our clients,&#8221; said Moseley. \u201cThe engineering\/business disconnect, combined with my newly found passion for science, inspired me to become an engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moseley enrolled at UT, starting from scratch with his classes, and spent the next five years working toward his master\u2019s in mechanical engineering and simultaneously his MBA from the Haslam College of Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of a heavy course load, Moseley became very involved in MABE. He worked as a student advisor, performed research in the Electrochemical Energy and Storage and Conversion Laboratory and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a>, and served as an EcoCAR 3 project manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLooking back on my journey at UT, the impact the faculty had on my personal and professional success is staggering,\u201d said Moseley. \u201cNot only did those relationships lead to unique research opportunities, internships and assistantships, but also the discovery of my current job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moseley\u2019s advice to current students is to get to know your professors. \u201cFind a mentor and don\u2019t underestimate the power of your network.
