{"id":447,"date":"2014-04-01T07:52:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T11:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/?p=447"},"modified":"2025-06-30T07:59:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T11:59:21","slug":"students-recognized-nsbe-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/news\/students-recognized-nsbe-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"Several MABE Students Recognized at NSBE Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Annual <a href=\"https:\/\/convention.nsbe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National NSBE Convention<\/a> was held in Nashville, TN on Wednesday, March 26\u201330, 2014. NSBE stands for \u201cNational Society of Black Engineers\u201d and with more than 29,900 members, it is one of the largest student-governed organizations in the country. Founded in 1975, NSBE now includes more than\u00a0394 College, Pre-College, and NSBE Professional chapters in the United States and abroad. NSBE\u2019s mission is\u00a0\u201cto increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UT chapter, founded and chartered in 1980,\u00a0was recognized as \u201cRegional Medium Chapter of the Year\u201d (second year in a row).\u00a0Also, the UT chapter was recognized, for the first time, as the\u00a0\u201cNational Medium Chapter of the Year\u201d at the Golden Torch Awards on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Each year, NSBE recognizes and celebrates the achievements of chapters that advance the goals of the society, contribute to the community and the engineering profession. Chapter Excellence Awards are awarded to the chapters on the regional and national levels that best satisfy the criteria outlined in the Chapter Development Program (academic enhancement of its members, in scholarship, leadership, and in the overall facilitation of programs and activities).\u00a0The UT president for the chapter is\u00a0Diamond Wallace, a senior from Memphis, TN majoring in Biomedical Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSBE also recognized three outstanding UT engineering students as national scholarship recipients. The following scholars are listed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sierra Ellis\u00a0(BCA Fellow Scholar), a freshman from Memphis, TN majoring in Mechanical Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Markyth Smith\u00a0(Lockheed Martin Scholar), a sophomore from Nashville, TN majoring in Mechanical Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DeAnna Walker (Major Fellow Scholar), a senior from Chattanooga, TN majoring in Civil Engineering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, Tiffany Sithiphone, a senior from Nashville, TN majoring in Industrial Engineering has been elected to serve as chair for Region 3 NSBE Executive Board.\u00a0Region 3 is made up of the southeastern states (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida). Sithiphone is the first UT female student to serve as chair for Region 3 NSBE. Trevor Williams was the first UT student to serve as chair for Region 3 NSBE in 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several engineering students were recognized for their hard
