{"id":1345,"date":"2021-11-19T18:31:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T23:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/?p=1345"},"modified":"2025-07-29T18:33:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T22:33:27","slug":"college-partners-with-msc-industrial-supply-to-drive-innovation-in-smart-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/news\/college-partners-with-msc-industrial-supply-to-drive-innovation-in-smart-manufacturing\/","title":{"rendered":"College Partners with MSC Industrial Supply to Drive Innovation in Smart Manufacturing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mscdirect.com\/\">MSC Industrial Supply Company<\/a>&nbsp;have announced a public-private research partnership aimed at advancing machining across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the partnership, MSC\u2019s team of professional metalworking specialists will work closely with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as manufacturers, to conduct research that will enable and drive innovation in smart manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reflect MSC\u2019s commitment to machining research as a premier distributor of metalworking products and services to industrial customers, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mtrc.utk.edu\/\">Machine Tool Research Center<\/a>&nbsp;at UT will host the MSC Machining Research Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis partnership provides the presence of MSC as a leader in machining on the UT campus at the Machine Tool Research Center,\u201d said\u00a0Tickle College of Engineering\u00a0Dean Matthew Mench, the Wayne T. Davis Dean\u2019s Chair in the college. \u201cThis unique relationship highlights UT\u2019s commitment to manufacturing research, including advanced machining, and provides a tremendous opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to work with MSC on solving real-world machining problems and developing next generation machining capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At UT,\u00a0Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering\u00a0Professor Tony Schmitz will serve as lead on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schmitz holds a joint appointment with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a>&nbsp;and is also director of both the Machine Tool Research Center as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seamtn.utk.edu\/\">Southeastern Advanced Machine Tools Network<\/a>&nbsp;(SEAMTN), a consortium of companies, colleges and universities, national laboratories, non-profit organizations, and the state of Tennessee that seeks to strengthen the US industrial base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full announcement can be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.mscdirect.com\/global\/media\/pdf\/corporate\/press-releases\/MSC-univoftenn-press-release.pdf\">seen at MSC<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UT and MSC Industrial Supply Company have announced a public-private research partnership aimed at advancing machining across the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[384,7,6],"tags":[282],"class_list":["post-1345","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-faculty","category-news","category-research","tag-tony-schmitz"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
