{"id":1098,"date":"2023-05-18T16:33:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T20:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/?p=1098"},"modified":"2025-07-24T16:45:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T20:45:50","slug":"gate-opens-for-engineering-grad-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/news\/gate-opens-for-engineering-grad-students\/","title":{"rendered":"GATE Opens for Engineering Grad Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UT\u2019s Science Alliance announced three Tickle College of Engineering graduate students as recipients of 2023\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scialli.utk.edu\/graduate-advancement-training-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Graduate Advancement Training and Education (GATE)<\/a>\u00a0fellowships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GATE program supports graduate students through assistantships and fellowships awarded by individual departments to support meritorious, collaborative research between the university and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These TCE graduate students will begin their fellowship terms on August 1, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fcmf.utk.edu\/people\/sanjita-wasti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sanjita Wasti<\/a>\u00a0works on the manufacturing and characterization of different types of composite materials in her research within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering. Her PhD study focuses on the development and processing of natural and hybrid fiber-reinforced composites for automotive applications. She is also working on different techniques to improve the interface between natural fiber and polymer matrix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/07\/Sanjita-Wasti-MABE-GATE-Fellow.jpg\" alt=\"Sanjita Wasti\" class=\"wp-image-1099\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Science Alliance is a Tennessee Center of Excellence established in 1984. Its mission is to expand cooperative ventures in research with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and in that process enhance science and engineering research programs at the University of Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wasti works with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/mae\/faculty\/uday-vaidya\/\">Uday Vaidya<\/a>, UT\u2019s Governor\u2019s Chair in Advanced Composites Manufacturing Professor, at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fcmf.utk.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary area of\u00a0Shamiul Alam\u2019s\u00a0PhD research in the Min Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) revolves around the development of device models and circuits aimed at enabling next-generation memory, logic, and logic-in-memory systems utilizing semiconducting, superconducting, and topological devices. The outcomes of Alam\u2019s PhD research carry significant implications for fields like artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and quantum computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alam works with Assistant Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.utk.edu\/people\/ahmedullah-aziz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ahmedullah Aziz<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nordic.eecs.utk.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NorDIC Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dismat.utk.edu\/people\/john-hirtz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Hirtz\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0PhD research in the Department of Nuclear Engineering investigates the structural changes of spinel oxides in extreme conditions. His focus is on creating sample environments at extreme pressure and high temperature with the ability to perform in situ characterization. These measurements are performed at multiple beam lines at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Argonne National Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0and ORNL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hirtz works with Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ne.utk.edu\/people\/maik-k-lang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maik Lang<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dismat.utk.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disordered Materials (DISMAT)
