Joint Institute for Advanced Materials

These are exciting times for materials scientists at the UT-ORNL Joint Institute for Advanced Materials. JIAM’s new 140,000-square-foot research facility represents one of the world’s premier centers for advanced materials research. Established in 2005, the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM), which comprises a multidisciplinary team of scientists from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), operates at the forefront of modern materials science.

JIAM’s research staff—which comprises physicists, chemists, computer scientists, microscopists, and engineers, among others—provides a broad, multidisciplinary platform and positions JIAM to address an extensive range of challenges confronting today’s materials scientists.

JIAM will provide current and future students with ample opportunities to work under capable mentors, to hone research skills, and, ultimately, to define career paths.
