Every senior is required to participate in the program as a final display of cumulative knowledge and expertise in their field of study.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">About the Program<\/h2>\n<p>The capstone project spans two semesters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First Semester (IE 404):<\/strong> Beginning with the development of a project plan, whereby students define end-user needs, client needs, requirements and constraints, and performance measures. Proceeding through concept design.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second Semester (IE 422):<\/strong> Conducting preliminary design and detailed design\u00a0(system- and component-level), testing, evaluating, and validating the design, and delivering designs to clients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each team ultimately produces a working prototype or system design that is tested and refined to meet the project objectives.\u00a0The project could be for any system but should be comprehensive. The design should follow systems engineering principles and procedures.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"orange-mark\">Explore Recent Senior Design Projects<\/h2>\n<div class=\"panel-group\" id=\"custom-collapse-0\" role=\"tablist\" aria-multiselectable=\"true\"><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> John Deere<\/a><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"custom-collapse-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\"><div class=\"panel-body\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Receiving audit improvement<\/li>\n<li>service parts improvement<\/li>\n<li>weld capacity planning<\/li>\n<li>inventory optimization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There were 3 teams for John Deere, each with a different task at hand.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop a scalable and standardized receiving audit for purchased parts then deliver data analytics and technology solutions for the audit process.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a new layout for the service department, developing new standardized operating procedures and introducing new inventory management techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Create a schedule optimization tool to meet customer requirements and reduce overproduction by establishing buffer stocking levels for mower decks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-1\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-1\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> UT Reliability &amp; Maintainability Center<\/a><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"custom-collapse-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\"><div class=\"panel-body\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>standardize safety and ergonomics testing methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project will functionalize the Future Concepts Room\/Laboratory and standardize Safety and Ergonomics testing methods.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/rmc.utk.edu\/\">Reliability &amp; Maintainability Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-2\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-2\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Eaton<\/a><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"custom-collapse-0-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\"><div class=\"panel-body\"><\/p>\n<p>There were 2 teams for Eaton Assembly, each with a different job to do.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The first team sought to ease training for Eaton employees and to create a combined knowledge base for the Company. The desired standard work and training documents, with a realistic time to train, will be used to train new hires. The current documentation will be consolidated then revised for the 7241 Assembly Line. With this effective training material, Eaton also hopes to reduce attrition and increase the pass rate for trainees based on their in-house quality standards.<\/li>\n<li>The second team used the current documentation to consolidate then revised for Fabrication Press 7025.
