NAE GRAND CHALLENGES<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Throughout human history, engineering has driven the advancement of civilization. For all of the advances, however, the 21st century poses challenges just as formidable as those from past millennia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, the National Academy of Engineering<\/a> identified 14 Grand Challenges for engineering in the 21st century. These challenges represent each of the broad realms of human concern\u2013sustainability, health, vulnerability, joy of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Grand Challenges, the world\u2019s cadre of engineers will seek ways to put knowledge into practice to meet these grand challenges. Applying the rules of reason, the findings of science, the aesthetics of art, and the spark of creative imagination, engineers will continue the tradition of forging a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grand Challenge Scholars Program<\/a> is the companion program for engineering schools that have accepted the challenge of designing combined curricular and extracurricular programs to prepare students to be the generation that solves the grand challenges facing society. In 2009, the college established an approved Grand Challenge Scholars Program becoming one of only 50 engineering schools in the country to have this prestigious program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advanced Personal Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A growing appreciation of individual preferences and aptitudes has led toward more \u201cpersonalized learning,\u201d in which instruction is tailored to a student\u2019s individual needs. Given the diversity of individual preferences, and the complexity of each human brain, developing teaching methods that optimize learning will require engineering solutions of the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Make Solar Energy Economical<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Currently, solar energy provides less than 1 percent of the world\u2019s total energy, but it has the potential to provide much, much more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Enhance Virtual Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Within many specialized fields, from psychiatry to education, virtual reality is becoming a powerful new tool for training practitioners and treating patients, in addition to its growing use in various forms of entertainment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Reverse-Engineer the Brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A lot of research has been focused on creating thinking machines\u2014computers capable of emulating human intelligence\u2014however, reverse-engineering the brain could have multiple impacts that go far beyond artificial intelligence and will promise great advances in health care, manufacturing, and communication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As computers have become available for all aspects of human endeavors, there is now a consensus that a systematic approach to health informatics\u2014the acquisition, management, and use of information in health\u2014can greatly enhance the quality and efficiency of medical care and the response to widespread public health emergencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is clear that engineering needs to develop innovations for addressing a long list of cybersecurity priorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
