A Virtual Reality Introduction to Design, Education, Activity, and Research at UT

The Tickle College of Engineering, in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Computer Science at UT Chattanooga, and the Department of Engineering at UT Martin, is hosting a UT-system-wide competition to introduce college life at UT involving various design, education, activity, and research (DEAR) events using virtual reality (VR) technology.

  • Design
    Illustration of design concepts in any area of engineering or engineering-related fields.
  • Education
    Any Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)-related educational subjects.
  • Activity
    Student life and extracurricular activities at UT.
  • Research
    Any student-led research experience and projects.

Phase 1

Concept competition: Applications are due May 1. A committee will select successful applications by May 15.

Phase 2

Product competition: 90-second video; applications are due October 15. The final product will be a 3D video that can be easily experienced by the audience by using Google Cardboard.

All inquiries should be directed to UTinVR@utk.edu. Additionally, join the Google Group to discuss the project with faculty who are involved.

Rules

  • Phase 1
    Applications should be no more than three pages, single-spaced, one-inch margins on all sides. All applications must include a list of team members, their majors, and emails. Proposals must identify a team lead who will be attending UT in Fall 2021. The application must identify which category is addressed and include the following sections: title, project description, proposed idea, implementation plan, references. Application must be submitted in one PDF file. Make submissions via this Google Form. Teams may also submit a short video (no more than two minutes in length) to present a demo or explanation of their ideas.
  • Phase 2
    Resources and technical support will be provided to assist finalist teams to carry out their ideas for Phase 2. Winning teams will receive monetary awards of up to $750 for the top prize. Details for Phase 2 will be announced after the selection of the finalists. The project could be composed of 3D videos or digital virtual reality environments. 3D video cameras will be made available for groups that have been selected to Phase 2.

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at the UT Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Martin campuses.
  • Teams must consist of up to five participants.
  • Cross-disciplinary teams are highly encouraged (i.e.: from multiple colleges and departments).
