David Barnes: Student Report from 2017 Alternative Fall Break in Cuba

I wanted to do something different senior year, so I signed up for the college’s trip to Cuba, and it was the best spontaneous decision I have ever made. Cuba is a sight to see. The history and architecture of Cuba are simply amazing, and the people we met and worked with were even more so. When we arrived in Cuba, it was just like traveling back in time. I urge anyone who wants to experience and gain a whole new perspective on life to travel there.

Throughout the week, we traveled to many historical buildings, museums, and forts in Havana. I am not going to lie, I am usually the person that is bored in museums, but this did not happen at all in Cuba. Every little artifact, display, and picture had great significance to the history of Cuba, and it was very interesting to learn about events from another perspective.  If you like seeing breathtaking sunsets while on the top of a fort, you need to visit there.

The environment of Havana is so lively and positive, both day and night. Bands are playing throughout the streets and restaurants, waiters are trying to attract customers into their restaurant by making them laugh with their witty comments, and cultural dancing takes place all around the square.

The people in Cuba had a huge impact on me. In a community where we helped a little on a few days, they did not have much, but they still had everything. They have the most positive outlook on life regardless of their circumstances. They all had smiles on, cracking jokes, and overall enjoying life to the fullest.

I encourage anyone who is looking to have fun while learning about different cultures and yourself as an individual to get out of your comfort zone, and travel on one of these amazing trips, you will not regret it.
