{"id":600,"date":"2024-09-03T11:43:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T15:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/?p=600"},"modified":"2025-07-28T17:02:43","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T21:02:43","slug":"grand-grant-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/news\/grand-grant-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand Grant Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TCE Faculty Receive Grand Challenges Grants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five faculty members from the Tickle College of Engineering are involved in projects that received 2024 Grand Challenges Type 1 Grants, a key initiative of the University of Tennessee System to turn bold ideas into impactful action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grand Challenges Grants embody the UT System\u2019s commitment to tackling the pressing issues facing the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grants provide essential seed funding to address three pivotal areas: advancing K-12 education, strengthening rural communities. and overcoming addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 27 Type 1 proposals, each eligible for up to $100,000 per project, have been awarded more than $2.6 million in funding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 grant awards in advancing K-12 education: $987,500<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10 grant awards in strengthening rural communities: $965,000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7 grant awards in overcoming addiction: $682,500<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five TCE faculty members are involved in the following projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advancing K-12 Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Access + Content + Language = STEM Learning for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Youths (ACL=STEM)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/engage.utk.edu\/people\/betsy-chesnutt\/\">Betsy Chesnutt<\/a>, lecturer in engineering fundamentals (EF) in TCE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Thermal runaway in EV batteries: a transformational PBL unit for high school chemistry<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsi.edu\/people\/faculty\/peng-zhao\/\">Peng Zhao<\/a>, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strengthening Rural Communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Feasibility of Implementing Personalized eHealth Program through Fitness Wearable and Application Among Rural Cancer Survivors&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.utk.edu\/people\/weizi-li\/\">Weizi Li<\/a>\u00a0TCE, assistant professor in the Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eecs.utk.edu\/people\/jian-liu\/\">Jian Liu<\/a>\u00a0TCE, assistant professor in EECS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mabe.utk.edu\/people\/xiaopeng-zhao\/\">Xiaopeng Zhao<\/a>, professor in MABE and program director of AI Initiatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Rural Expansion of Access to Genetic Counseling and Healthcare through AI Innovations (REACH)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Xiaopeng Zhao, program director of AI Initiatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Grand Challenge Grants competition saw 110 proposals submitted from teams across all UT campuses and institutes.
