{"id":236,"date":"2019-05-02T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-02T18:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/?p=236"},"modified":"2025-07-28T17:03:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T21:03:51","slug":"kihm-receives-open-education-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/news\/kihm-receives-open-education-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Kihm Receives Open Education Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-3135 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/07\/Kihm2-225x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Ken Kihm\" class=\"wp-image-237\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Kihm received an Open Education Award from the Student Government Association<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MABE Professor Ken Kihm is one of three faculty members to receive an Open Education Award from UT\u2019s Student Government Association (SGA) due to his use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SGA partnered with the University Libraries to establish the annual award to recognize faculty and lecturers who use OERs\u2014teaching and learning materials that are free of cost and access barriers\u2014in the classroom to promote and contribute to a culture of openness and knowledge sharing. Using OERs not only increases student access to course materials, but also lessens the financial burden on students and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nominations are made by students, and members of SGA\u2019s Academic Affairs Committee collaborate with the Libraries\u2019 Dean\u2019s Student Advisory Committee to review the nominations and chose the winners. The judges base their decision on the impact of learning, innovation in teaching, and economic impact on students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kihm was nominated for the award by students in his AE 351 class. Some of the comments from the students included, \u201c\u2026it simplified the learning experience. Dr. Kihm is an excellent professor and true to provide as many resources as he can to maximize success,\u201d and \u201chaving an open textbook was very effective and saved me a lot of money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReceiving the Open Education Award is an honor,\u201d said Kihm. \u201cI enjoy teaching my class with the open book resources, and I am happy my students are benefiting from this new way of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kihm received his award at a campus reception on April 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenneth Kihm received am Open Education Award for advancing accessible, high-quality engineering education through innovative teaching and open resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[43,44],"class_list":["post-236","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-ken-kihm","tag-open-education-award"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
