{"id":1080,"date":"2026-08-28T10:20:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T14:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/?p=1080"},"modified":"2026-08-28T10:24:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T14:24:59","slug":"bme-senior-design-teams-showcase-innovative-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/news\/bme-senior-design-teams-showcase-innovative-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"BME Senior Design Teams Showcase Innovative Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From novel gene guns and biodegradable mesh sutures to training devices and protective shields, the 2025-26 senior design teams in the Department of Biomedical Engineering showcased an array of innovative projects that helped address real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BME featured 20 teams that worked on projects for clients that included the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, the UT Institute of Agriculture, and the UT College of Nursing. In total, each team completed 27 deliverables and five presentations throughout the two-semester design process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BME program faculty select design projects with a balance of challenge, complexity, and required work. Based on the FDA\u2019s design control guidelines for medical device manufacturers, each project was broken into five phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">project proposal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">conceptual design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">design for manufacturing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">manufacturing and fabrication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--medium)\">product testing and qualification<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudents experience open-ended biomedical design projects.&nbsp;Participants gain systematic knowledge of the design process organized by general principles and life cycle phases of biomedical innovations,\u201d said BME Associate Professor and senior design instructor Jeff Reinbolt said. \u201cThis process has given participants the opportunity to evaluate and ensure innovations suit functionality and performance requirements. The open-ended biomedical design projects foster students to build upon their theoretical knowledge and develop problem-solving skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the projects completed this spring were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-content-justification-left is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-1edc6ba4 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--xx-small)\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-orange-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-orange-background-color has-background\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pediatric Chest Tube Trainer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tickle.utk.edu\/bme\/news\/senior-design-teams-create-pediatric-chest-tube-trainers-for-college-of-nursing\/\">A pediatric chest tube trainer<\/a> to help UT nursing students learn how to manage a collapsed lung and practice proper needle insertion in babies and infants. Two senior design teams designed a cost-efficient and practical model of varying ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to know&nbsp;our product will actually be able to be used by nursing students who help treat patients,\u201d said Emma Sieg, who helped design the&nbsp;child-sized prototype&nbsp;with the&nbsp;BioInnovators&nbsp;group. \u201cHopefully,&nbsp;they\u2019ll&nbsp;get a better understanding of how to diagnose and treat pneumothorax, so when the situation comes&nbsp;up when they are a&nbsp;nurse,&nbsp;they will know how to do it from our model. The work requires using a gene gun to engineer plant chloroplasts. In collaboration James McLoughlin at UT Medical Center, a BME team designed an assistive device for liver ablation surgeries of small tumors. McLoughlin wanted to develop a sensor system to more efficiently identify cancerous tissue during ablation surgery that can provide real-time feedback to the surgeon while not interfering with the normal operation of the ablation tool.
