An externally worn limb prosthesis is the standard means to restore part of the missing limb’s function. Unfortunately, according to recent surveys, external prosthetic limbs still do not move or feel like the biological intact limb. This partly explains why as many as 45% of amputees eventually abandon their prosthesis. To address this problem, we are developing end-limb endoprosthetics, a revolutionary new class of orthopedic implants that can be used to surgically reconstruct the missing limb. A key innovative feature of end-limb endoprostheses is that they will be completely covered and enclosed within the patient’s own living skin. In some applications, the endoprosthesis will be jointed and attached to residual muscles to enable direct, natural control of prosthesis movements. Our skin-covered endoprosthetics promise to restore natural function, appearance, and skin sensation to people with amputation. We are actively working to translate the technology to the clinic, with the first human device targeting patients with thumb amputation.

Representative publications:

Crouch DL, Hall PT, Stubbs C, Billings C, Pedersen AP, Burton B, Greenacre CB, Stephenson SM, Anderson DE.
