Townsend Wins ANS Award

Recently retired nuclear engineering Professor Lawrence Townsend has been selected to receive the 2017 Radiation Science and Technology Award from the American Nuclear Society Isotopes and Radiation Division.

The award recognizes outstanding creative applications of radiation sciences and engineering principles. Townsend is cited for leadership in developing and applying methods of radiation interaction and transport in matter for space radiation shielding and risk assessment applications.

Townsend will receive an engraved plaque and a $2,000 monetary award, to be presented during the President’s Special Session of the ANS Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, on October 30.

Research Professor Wu Earns 2017 Radiation Instrumentation Early Career Award

Yuntao Wu, a research assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, earned the prestigious 2017 Radiation Instrumentation Early Career Award of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society.

Wu works with the Scintillation Materials Research Center. He was cited for contribution to the development of inorganic scintillators for radiation detection applications.

This award is given to a young investigator in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to the fields of radiation instrumentation and measurement techniques for ionizing radiation. The prize, consisting of $1,500 and an engraved plaque, will be awarded at the IEEE/NPSS Nuclear Science Symposium.
