Liaw Named to Exclusive Materials Fellowship

Peter Liaw, Professor and Ivan Racheff Chair of Excellence, was named in early March as a fellow in TMS, the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society last week.

This award recognizes TMS members who are qualified for elevation to the Class of Fellow by reason of outstanding contributions to the practice of metallurgy, materials science, and technology.

Liaw’s citation read, “For seminal contributions to the fundamental understanding of fatigue and fracture behavior in metals and alloys, including advanced structural materials.”

“I joined TMS as a member when I was a graduate student at Northwestern University,” said Liaw. “TMS gives us the precious opportunity to attend technical meetings and to interact with and learn from our colleagues from around the world. It is a great pleasure and honor to become a TMS Fellow. We will continue to grow with TMS.”

The award includes a life membership to TMS and is considered a pinnacle award. Only 100 living individuals can be a Fellow at any one time.

Faber Awarded for Engineering Education Research

Courtney Faber earned the 2018 ASEE Southeastern Section Thomas C. Evans Engineering Education Paper Award at the ASEE Southeastern Section 2018 Conference, March 5 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

“I am honored to receive this recognition from the ASEE South East section,” said Faber. “It was a great opportunity to highlight my research in engineering education and the dedication by the Tickle College of Engineering to advance this field of study.”

Faber is a lecturer and research assistant professor in the Cook Grand Challenge Honors Program. She presented the paper “Engineering Students’ Epistemic Cognition in the Context of Problem Solving,” co-written with colleague Lisa Benson of Clemson University.

Associate Dean Lynne Parker, in her nomination of the paper, said, “I believe this paper is an exceptional example of engineering education research, making multiple contributions to the engineering education community that span research and practice.”
