Engineering Leadership and Project Management, Undergraduate Certificate

The Engineering Leadership and Project Management certificate program at the Tickle College of Engineering is designed to provide engineers with the leadership, organizational, and technical skills required to lead complex projects from inception to completion. 

Program overview

This nine credit program integrates key project management principles with engineering leadership, preparing students to effectively manage teams, resources, and timelines in both technical and cross-functional environments. The curriculum emphasizes the application of project management tools and methodologies, as well as the development of strategic leadership skills that enable engineers to oversee projects, mitigate risks, and ensure successful outcomes in a variety of industries.

Students who participate in the Leadership in Engineering and Entrepreneurship Program develop key leadership skills and prepare for early career success. The cross-disciplinary program focuses on emotional intelligence, communication, conflict management, and team dynamics.

Learn from Entrepreneur in Residence Angelique Adams, connect with alumni and industry partners, and earn a 12-credit certificate in Engineering Leadership with options in entrepreneurship, project management, or public policy.

Access tools and programs that support innovation and entrepreneurship, including the Anderson Center for mentorship and business growth, UTRF for protecting and commercializing research, and I-Corps for hands-on training to bring inventions to market.

What can you do with an undergrad certificate in Engineering Leadership and Project Management after graduation?

Students completing this program will be well equipped for the following career options:

  1. Project Manager (Engineering): Lead and manage large-scale engineering projects, overseeing teams, budgets, and timelines to ensure successful delivery.
  2. Construction Project Manager: Lead construction and infrastructure projects, managing resources and stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.
  3. Consulting Project Manager: Provide project management expertise to companies and organizations, guiding them through complex engineering initiatives.

Below are some of the courses that students in our program can choose to take.

IE 452 Project Planning and Organizational Management

Aspects of leadership in a professional environment will be studied from current literature reading and discussions. Industry professionals will periodically lead the class to enlighten students to aspects of organizational and project management. Lectures will be based on the Project Management Body of knowledge (PMBOK) and will qualify students to take the CAPM/PMP certification exam at the end of their Senior year. Each student will develop a project plan including Project Charter, scope management, Communication plan, with an oral project review presentation.

EF 316 Engineering Leadership

This class introduces engineering students to the concepts, theory, and practice of engineering leadership. Topics include emotional intelligence, communication, decision-making, conflict management, and team dynamics. Through a combination of theory, practical exercises, personal reflection, and real-world case studies, students will gain valuable insights into leadership principles and their application engineering contexts.

IE 405 Engineering Economic Analysis

Role of engineering economy in engineering practice; principles of economic equivalence; time value of money and discounted cash-flow techniques; analysis of single and multiple investments; comparison of alternatives; capital recovery and tax implications; inflation; public sector analysis; cost estimation; depreciation schedules; break-even point concepts; decision making under uncertainty; risk analysis; introduction to investing in the financial market; basic accounting principles and financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, cost of goods sold statements, and business ratios.

IE 430 Supply Chain Engineering

An overview of supply chain engineering with topics including: building a strategic framework to analyze supply chains, designing the supply chain network, planning demand and supply, planning and managing inventories, sourcing, transporting, and pricing products, and coordination and technology in the supply chain.
